Mary Baker Eddy, Discover and Founder of Christian Science

Recently an article in the The Daily Star and on thedailystar.com, Oneonta, NY on November 22, 2010 titled “Mary Baker Eddy Broke Ground 100 years ago” by Cheryl Petersen was referred to my attention.  We have submitted this corrective article to The Daily Star to be published in the print and online editions.

The article speaks to Eddy’s “intriguing track-record and a sizable contribution to the legacy of mind-healing.” And “eventually writing and publishing a book on the subject of mind-healing titled ‘Science and Health with key to the Scriptures.’”

Mary Baker Eddy’s discovery was that God is Mind and thus Mind Healing is scientific and based on spiritual laws – not mind over matter as in blind faith, positive thought or will power. The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures states, “The term Science, properly understood, refers only to the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man.” It is based on an understanding of God – Creator of Man in His image and likeness – perfect!

The article’s chronological history of Mary Baker Eddy makes reference that “Eddy matured into a submissive woman typical to the 19th century attitude that women were to get married and bear children.”

Eddy married three times and had a son that was taken from her at a time of health and financial challenges. Although at this time of Eddy’s life it was normal for woman to marry and traditional for a woman to have a home centered responsibility. I do not see any proclivity of her as submissive; in fact she had a bible based puritan ethic that was anything but submissive. She challenged the paradigm of a woman’s place in 19th Century New England Society and specifically as to their place in religion, politics, business and marriage. This challenge was based in a childhood faith-based independence that was foundational to her early search for the truth of her equality and right to fulfillment as created in God’s image and after God’s likeness (Gen: 1:26). She was later to write in the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “If a dissolute husband deserts his wife, certainly the wronged, and perchance impoverished, woman should be allowed to collect her own wages, enter into business agreements, hold real estate, deposit funds, and own her own children free from interference.”

Eddy intuitively believed that there was a scientific bases to spiritual healing as taught and practiced by Christ Jesus and his disciples and apostles. On experiencing a healing from a terminal accident she persevered to discover the science of the Christ and named her discovery Christian Science. She went on to prove her discovery of the Science of Christ by first healing all forms of sin, sickness, and disease and then in 1875 after 3 years intensive study of the Bible she fully disclosed the Christ Science in her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

Eddy established the Christian Science Church in 1879 to re-establish the lost art of spiritual healing as taught and practiced by Christ Jesus, disciples, apostles, and prophets and made the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures pastors of the Church of Christ Scientist, with branch churches worldwide. She later went on to establish a Publishing Society, which publishes weekly and monthly periodicals, and an international recognized newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor – hardly a submissive legacy!
